Behind the Lyrics

There's an affiliate website on my client roster that I think about more than I probably should. It sits in a brutal niche, its whole value built on exclusive access. We put real hours into it: proper technical and on-page SEO, no shortcuts. And it worked, on paper. Page one for several competitive keywords. The clicks kept dropping anyway. Same rankings, fewer visitors, month after month, as if we'd built the best stall in the market on a street nobody walks down anymore. Eventually the client said it plainly: "WTF are we doing? If we don't stop this trend, we have to restructure the company." I didn't have a clean answer then, and I don't now. What surprised me is how at peace I am with it. Not resigned. At peace. The old version of SEO (stack the keywords, build the links, win the position, collect the click) was never that interesting to practise. What's replacing it leans much harder on off-page: reputation, trust, being the name someone already recognises before they type the question. It's harder to fake, and it rewards the parts of the work I actually respect. Soulful Afro house, because the song imagines a brand that doesn't need you to leave the room to find it. Presence over clicks. Groove over traffic. I still don't have one clean line for a client dashboard explaining why "ranked number one" means less than it used to. So I wrote a song instead.
