The Pivot Polka
The Pivot Polka lyrics
A song about pivots in the search of product-market fit
Lyrics
Raised the price, then dropped it low
Moved the buttons, changed the glow
New tagline on the door
Same sad scroll, same churn galore
Tried a pivot, tried a perk
Tried to make the widget work
User said, “It’s kinda nice”
Then they vanished in the night
We keep chasing the same old ghost
Every boardroom loves it most
Then the chart does that little slide
Like a banana peel in a tie
It keeps slipping
It keeps slipping
Product-market fit keeps slipping
We almost had it, then it dipped
It keeps slipping
It keeps slipping
We call it “strategy”
But it’s just us tripping on the zip
Changed the funnel, changed the name
Changed the team and played the game
Added “AI” to the slide
Still the bounce rate runs and hides
Launched on Monday, failed by noon
Had a pizza, had a moonshot tune
Investor laughed, “You’re close!”
Then the whole thing slid like soap
We keep chasing the same old ghost
Every boardroom loves it most
Then the chart does that little slide
Like a banana peel in a tie
It keeps slipping
It keeps slipping
Product-market fit keeps slipping
We almost had it, then it dipped
It keeps slipping
It keeps slipping
We call it “strategy”
But it’s just us tripping on the zip
Maybe it’s them
Maybe it’s me
Maybe the market’s just hard to please
One more tweak, one more scan
Oh wait, there goes the whole damn plan
It keeps slipping
It keeps slipping
Product-market fit keeps slipping
We almost had it, then it dipped
It keeps slipping
It keeps slipping
We keep renaming the same old thing
And falling faster on the zip
Slip, slip
There it goes
New deck, same joke
And everybody knows (it keeps slipping)
Behind the Lyrics
I've pivoted my own agency more times than I'd like to count. 4 Pillars Digital started out chasing content marketing. Then AI arrived and everyone panicked into "SEO agency" mode. Then ecommerce and iGaming clients started asking for growth marketing, which really meant performance marketing, which really meant "can you also run the ad money, please". So the agency kept quietly repositioning underneath me, like a ship changing course mid-storm. Not because the service was wrong. Because I kept telling myself the positioning was. Every "we're excited to announce our new direction" post is someone doing what I did: repainting the sign on the door instead of asking why nobody's walking through it. Polka was obvious. I grew up around folk dance, and polka is all spin: fast, tight, always turning, never actually going anywhere except back to where you started, only dizzier. That's a pivot. You spin, land facing a slightly different direction, tell everyone it was intentional, and spin again. I was the guy in the suit doing the polka. I still catch myself at it. The trick isn't to stop pivoting. It's to notice when the spinning has become the strategy.
