Round 9
Round 9 lyrics
A song about client revision round nine circling back to round one
Lyrics
Round one. Clean.
Round two. Fine.
Round nine? Mou ikkai.
Round nine, もう一回 (mou ikkai) yeah
Round nine, 違う (chigau) okay
Round nine, もう一回 (mou ikkai)
I say okay, I say okay
Came in with a concept, came in clean
Best work I've done, best you've seen
"Feels a little flat" - 何 (nani)?
Sent the deck on Monday, here we go
Version two, same idea, tighter flow
"Getting warmer" - damn, I don't know
Every round I give you something new
Every round you say "almost, but not quite you"
Round nine, mou ikkai (もう一回) yeah
Round nine, chigau (違う) okay
Round nine, mou ikkai (もう一回)
I say okay, I say okay
Round four you said sharper
Round five you said cleaner
Round six you said "maybe go back a bit"
Back a bit? Shinjirarenai (信じられない) - I quit
(I didn't quit)
Round seven, round eight, same song
Wakannai what I'm doing wrong
Brief was two lines and a vibe
Chigau (違う) - that's all you describe
Yappari (やっぱり)...
You want round one
The first idea
The first one
Yappari (やっぱり)...
"Yeah I think that's it"
Round nine to round one
You've come full circle, kid
Round nine, mou ikkai (もう一回) yeah
Round nine, chigau (違う) okay
Round nine, mou ikkai (もう一回)
I say okay, I say okay
Round nine, chigau (違う)
Mou ikkai (もう一回) okay
Round nine, dame (ダメ)
I say okay
Round nine, ii ne? (いいね!)
Mou ikkai (もう一回)
Finally... ii ne. (いいね!)
Behind the Lyrics
I've never been a designer. I have, however, been the person across the table from one, trying to explain what I wanted while having no idea what I wanted. I'm the villain of this song, and I know it. There's a face creative people make when you say "I'll know it when I see it". It isn't anger. Anger would be too honest. It's a flicker, about a third of a second long, before the smile locks back into place and they say "totally, I'll send you something tomorrow". That face is Round 9. I got hooked on Miyauchi's "Swag" the way I get hooked on anything Japanese and relentlessly cool: immediately and without apology. It sat in my head for weeks, and I kept thinking that its swagger is exactly what a creative needs by round nine. Not rage. Not tears. Swag. The zero-degree calm of someone who has fully detached from the outcome and is now simply delivering. So the client in the song speaks Japanese. Not to be clever, but because client feedback has always been a foreign language. "Not quite right" tells you nothing. "Getting warmer" tells you less. "I'll know it when I see it" is three languages of not knowing, stacked in a trench coat. And the ending, which I've been on the wrong side of more than once: after nine rounds, the client picks round one.
